Stayed at the Cliff Bay and we loved it. Yes, it is certainly a more mature age demographic but that didn't worry us, we enjoyed the quiet atmosphere and the relaxing comfortable surroundings. Unfortunately the week we were there the weather was not good so we did not get to enjoy the lovely big pool on the lower level, the Blue Lagoon cafe etc. as it was not that warm and in fact these areas were out of bounds while the storm raged for a couple of days. We did however enjoy the indoor pool area and spa treatments which were excellent. Our room was east facing so if it had been sunny our balcony would not have got the afternoon/evening sun, for that reason I would probably go for sea view the next time. The rooms are all large and comfortable with a seating area and the bathroom, while it had a separate bath and shower, was not the most up to date as in for example no rainfall shower head, but it was perfectly functional and had double wash basins. Everything including the public areas was kept spotlessly clean. We ate in the Rose Garden three evenings and there was plenty of choice but even though the 'theme' of the food changed each evening, it might become a little repetitive to eat there every night. Bar food in the Cliff Bar was good and we had a room service dinner one night which was excellent, with a trolley table set up with table cloth etc. All the staff are unfailingly friendly, courteous and helpful, even the greeting from Reception staff on arrival marks the hotel out as being 5 star. If the sun had shone at all it would have been the perfect week's break. The complimentary shuttle bus to and from Funchal was handy if one did not want to walk but you need to book your pick-up time slot as it gets busy. Taxis readily available outside hotel. This is highly recommended.
